Zaporizhstal Reports Robust February Production Despite Challenges

In February, Ukraine-based steel mill Zaporizhstal, a subsidiary of Metinvest, reported a production of 195.7 thousand tons [1] of rolled steel. This figure represents a slight decrease of 1.4% compared to last year.

Despite the minor decline in rolled steel production, Zaporizhstal’s overall performance in February remained robust. The company produced 265.4 thousand tons of pig iron, marking a 6.7% increase year-on-year, and 235.3 thousand tons of crude steel, which saw a marginal decrease of 0.1% compared to February 2024.

The production results for the first two months of 2025 also reflect a positive trend. Zaporizhstal’s pig iron output amounted to 553.1 thousand tons, up by 7.9% year-on-year. Crude steel production totaled 478.3 thousand tons, a 1.5% increase, while finished steel production reached 413.3 thousand tons, up by 4.5% compared to the same period last year.

The slight decline in rolled steel production can be attributed to several factors, including the ongoing challenges faced by the Ukrainian steel industry. The proximity of the frontline, security risks, and significant energy supply restrictions have all impacted production capacities. Additionally, the global market crisis and stagnation of the domestic steel market have further complicated the situation for Zaporizhstal.

Despite these challenges, Zaporizhstal has managed to maintain an average production capacity utilization of 75%. The company’s focus on improving sustainability, efficiency, and competitiveness has been crucial in navigating the difficult circumstances. Acting CEO Taras Shevchenko emphasized the importance of these efforts in ensuring the plant’s continued operation and support for the team, the region, and the army.

Looking ahead, Zaporizhstal remains committed to finding solutions to enhance its resilience and productivity. The company aims to address the challenges posed by the current environment while supporting its workforce and contributing to the local economy.
