Union Steel and Heavy Industries Minister H. D. Kumaraswamy on Tuesday stressed the need for intensified research to curb pollution in the steel sector while reviewing the performance of his ministries. He also urged the Heavy Industries Ministry to boost domestic electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing, emphasizing greater support for local production.
According to an official statement, the minister reviewed the PM e-Drive and the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes. Officials presented plans to accelerate EV adoption, including the rollout of charging stations and the development of necessary infrastructure.
Kumaraswamy directed the Steel Ministry to prioritize research and development aimed at achieving zero pollution in the steel sector. He also called for new strategies and stronger partnerships to boost green steel production.
The ministry stated that it is in talks with Australian institutions, including the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and the University of New South Wales, for potential collaboration on hydrogen-based green steel production and decarbonization efforts.
