Amid ongoing challenges, Ukraine’s steel industry is showing resilience, with rolled steel production increasing by 6.6% year-on-year [1] in February 2025. According to data from Ukrmetprom, the country’s rolled steel output reached 476.9 thousand tons during the month. This growth reflects the industry’s ability to adapt and recover despite the disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict and global market uncertainties.
The February figures also highlight a mixed performance when compared to January 2025, as rolled steel production experienced a slight decline of 0.7% month-on-month. However, the annual growth trend remains a positive indicator for the sector. In addition to rolled steel, Ukraine’s pig iron production saw a 9.8% year-on-year increase, totaling 544.4 thousand tons, although it marked an 8.5% decrease from the previous month. Steel production also followed an upward trajectory, with a 7.5% year-on-year rise to 571.8 thousand tons in February.
For the first two months of 2025, Ukraine’s rolled steel production amounted to 957.1 thousand tons, reflecting a 6.3% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Pig iron production during this period rose by 8.5% to 1.14 million tons, while steel production increased by 9.9%, reaching 1.18 million tons.
Despite these promising figures, the Ukrainian steel industry faces significant challenges. Analysts from GMK Center have warned of potential difficulties in the global steel market throughout 2025, which could impact Ukraine’s steel exports and pricing dynamics. Factors such as fluctuating demand, competition from other steel-producing nations, and logistical constraints continue to pose risks to the industry’s growth.
Ukraine’s steel sector has historically been a essential component of the country’s economy, contributing significantly to GDP and exports.
