AMEA Power, a rapidly growing renewable energy company based in the UAE, has been awarded two significant Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects in South Africa [1] through a competitive bidding process. The projects, named Gainfar and Boitekong, are located in the North West Province and each will have a capacity of over 300 megawatt-hours (MWh).
These projects are part of South Africa’s Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP) and are expected to play a crucial role in enhancing grid stability and addressing the country’s frequent blackouts and load-shedding issues. The Gainfar Project will be connected to the Ngwedi substation, while the Boitekong Project will be connected to the Marang substation.
Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of AMEA Power, expressed pride in the achievement, highlighting the company’s commitment to providing sustainable, resilient, and cost-effective energy solutions. He emphasized that these projects will support South Africa’s energy transition and contribute to economic growth in the region.
The two BESS projects will be backed by 15-year Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with Eskom, South Africa’s national utility company. Once operational, these energy storage systems will provide reliable backup power, supporting the country’s renewable energy journey and ensuring a more stable electricity grid.
This announcement follows AMEA Power’s earlier success in December 2022, when the company was awarded the 120MW Doornhoek Solar PV Project through the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP). With an expanding portfolio and a regional office in Johannesburg, AMEA Power continues to contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable energy future for South Africa.
