Tata Steel Strengthens Green Steelmaking Efforts with Major Crane Project

Tata Steel UK has taken a significant step in its transition to sustainable steel [1] production by awarding a contract to JASO Industrial Cranes for the supply of high-capacity process cranes at its Port Talbot facility. This initiative is part of Tata Steel’s £1.25 billion investment in green steelmaking, aimed at reducing carbon emissions and modernizing operations.

The contract includes seven advanced process cranes, which will support the operations of Tata Steel’s Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) facility, a key component of its decarbonization strategy. Among these, three 500-tonne cranes will handle liquid steel ladles, ensuring efficient steel production. Additionally, two 80-tonne scrap cranes will facilitate raw material feeding into the EAF, while two 35-tonne cranes will assist in electrode maintenance.

Once operational in 2028, the EAF facility is expected to be one of the largest in the world, cutting carbon emissions by 90%, equivalent to five million tonnes of CO₂ annually.

Stuart Lloyd, Project Manager for the Cranes Project, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, noting that Tata Steel had previously worked with JASO to replace its 60-year-old North Charging Crane in 2019. He highlighted that lessons from that project have informed this latest phase of Tata Steel’s green steelmaking journey.

Raúl Fernández, Marketing & Sales Director at JASO Industrial Cranes, expressed pride in contributing to the UK steel industry’s transition to a more sustainable future, calling this order the largest and most impactful project in the company’s history.

Tata Steel’s investment in low-emission steel production aligns with broader industry efforts to reduce environmental impact while maintaining high-quality steel output. This latest development reinforces the company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in the global steel sector.
