Steelworkers in two northern French cities launched a strike on Wednesday, the CFDT union informed Reuters. The action follows ArcelorMittal’s announcement of possible closures of two plants in the region, which could impact around 130 workers.
The company said the potential closures are due to problems in the European auto industry and high raw material and energy costs.
Industries across Europe continue to face difficulties recovering, with high gas and electricity prices prompting companies like ArcelorMittal to implement job cuts and closures.
The steel company’s announcement comes two weeks after French tyre maker Michelin announced that it was closing two French sites
German automaker Volkswagen has also warned of possible factory closures.
