Ukraine’s steel industry has witnessed a sizeable increase [1] in domestic consumption during the first two months of 2025. According to recent data, the consumption of steel products, including rolled and semi-finished goods, reached an impressive 557,000 tons in January and February combined. This marks a significant recovery for the sector, which has faced challenges in recent years due to geopolitical tensions and economic disruptions.
The increase in steel consumption is attributed to a combination of factors, including heightened reconstruction efforts and infrastructure projects across the country. Imports played a substantial role, accounting for a significant portion of the domestic market. Flat steel products dominated the import landscape, reflecting their growing demand in various industries.
The proportion of flat products in Ukraine’s steel export deliveries rose significantly, reaching 47.8% compared to 38.7% during the same period last year. Exports of long products also saw an increase, climbing to 19% from 13.9%. However, the share of semi-finished products in exports declined, dropping to 33.2% from 47.5%.
In the first two months of 2025, the key export destinations for Ukrainian rolled steel were the European Union, accounting for 73.8% of exports, other European nations at 13.5%, and the CIS at 7.7%. On the import side, European countries outside the EU dominated, making up 56.6% of total imports, followed by the EU at 24.5%, and Asian nations at 18.5%.
On the production front, Ukrainian steelmakers have ramped up their output to meet rising domestic needs. However, exports have seen a decline, as more steel is being directed toward local consumption. Key export markets for Ukrainian steel include the European Union, other European countries, and Africa.
This surge in steel consumption underscores the resilience of Ukraine’s steel industry and its pivotal role in the nation’s economic recovery. As the country continues to rebuild and modernize, the demand for steel is expected to remain robust in the coming months.
