SSAB Joins EU Initiative to promote Hydrogen Gas Use in Industry

European Union co-founded a project named TWINGHY, aiming to introduce hydrogen as a fuel to replace natural gas in reheating furnaces in the steel sector. The project aims to create a digital twin-control furnace behavior and enhance operational efficiency.

The EU-funded project, launched in 2023, will continue for three years with a budget exceeding EUR 8 million. A total of nine companies and organizations are participating in the initiative, with the European Union contributing half the funding and the remaining amount being financed by the participants.

The project is expected to replace the traditional natural gas combustion in reheating furnaces in the steel sector. The digital twin is a virtual copy of the physical system that aims to simulate and optimize the hydrogen combustion process, says SSAB.

The TWINGHY project aims to showcase an advanced heat transfer process in steel sector reheating furnaces. By utilizing hybrid burners, the initiative seeks to enhance hydrogen combustion with oxygen while employing a Digital Twin to monitor and control the furnace operations.
