Shein Foundation Aims for Inclusive, Sustainable Communities with €5M Textile Recycling Initiative

Shein, a global online fashion retailer, announced the launch of the Shein Foundation, a new philanthropic arm dedicated to creating inclusive and sustainable communities.

In celebration of its debut, the foundation has donated €5 million (US$5.3 million) to the Africa Collect Textiles (ACT) Foundation, which will fund a pilot project in Kenya that aims to reduce waste and recycle textiles. It is anticipated that the money would be used to support initiatives that encourage post-consumer textile recycling and textile donation in Kenya and throughout Africa.

Supporting its sustainability claims, the Shein Foundation commented “Our goal is to help foster a more inclusive and accessible society, where everyone can contribute meaningfully and reach their full potential. Centring our efforts on women, young people and the underserved communities, we hope to empower individuals and communities to overcome systemic challenges and reshape societal norms.”

Shein’s current initiatives have helped address social and environmental issues like gender equality, child development, poverty alleviation, and textile waste reduction with about US$26 million over the last three years.

The company’s current charitable endeavors, such as those carried out through the Shein Cares and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Fund programs, will be consolidated under the Shein Foundation. Significantly, the Shein Foundation will put community well-being, biodiversity preservation, and sustainable change advancement at the forefront of its purpose.
