During a press conference at the Islamic Arts Biennale, the Saudi Fashion Commission announced its most recent sustainable initiative, the Sustainable Ihram initiative, focusing on recycling Ihram garments to create eco-friendly attire. The initiative aims to recycle Ihram clothing by collecting, sorting, and repurposing pilgrims’ textile waste to make new, sustainable Ihram attire.
The Fashion Commission launched the initiative in collaboration with Saudi Investment Recycling Company (SIRC), a leading waste management and circular economy company, and Sanko Textile, a professional group in sustainable textiles, to transform used Ihram garments into new, eco-friendly Ihram clothing. The revolutionary approach demonstrates the potential of textile recycling in the fashion sector and helps to create a more sustainable textile ecosystem. Furthermore, the commission collaborated with Tadweem, a prominent sustainable fashion company, with support from RE&UP, an innovative textile-to-textile recycling technology company, to further strengthen the initiative’s environmental impact.
The goal of the initiative is to promote sustainable practices, create consumer knowledge about textile recycling, and encourage the establishment of a circular textile economy in Saudi Arabia. The Sustainable Ihram Initiative is consistent with Saudi Vision 2030’s environmental protection goals, representing a significant step toward a more sustainable fashion ecosystem in Saudi Arabia.
