Salzgitter AG Ships First “Green Steel” to South Africa’s Automotive Industry

Salzgitter group companies are supplying SALCOS®green steel to South Africa for the first time for testing purposes. This investment gives them the first tier-1 supplier in the country to be using CO2-reduced steel for their customers’ vehicle production.

The two companies that have partnered in the same are Allied Steelrode and Malben Engineering in South Africa. As per SALCOS®, they have gained the necessary approvals for the environmentally compatible packaging and shipped on a biofuel-powered ocean-going vessel with a reduced CO2 footprint.

Salzgitter Flachstahl and Salzgitter Mannesmann International are joining forces with Allied Steelrode and Malben Engineering in the value chain to promote sustainable automotive production by way of low-CO2 steel products. “This collaboration supports the sustainability goals and associated innovations in the automotive industry as well as with its supply chain”, says Alexander Soboll, Managing Director of Salzgitter Mannesmann International GmbH.
Allied Steelrode, as a major steel supplier in South Africa, has a strong hand in this partnership along with Malben Engineering, who will be stamping and processing the components using the SALCOS® materials to support a shift toward more sustainable industrial practices.
