Sportswear giant Puma has signed a multi-year, non-binding Letter of Intent (LOI) with Woodspin [1], to secure volumes of wood-based Spinnova fiber for future collections. Woodspin is a joint venture between Spinnova and Suzano. This collaboration aims to showcase the potential of sustainably sourced and renewable raw materials to transform the fashion industry.
The partnership will focus on developing proof-of-concept products for Puma’s Sportstyle category, utilizing Spinnova’s innovative wood-based fiber. Spinnova’s patented technology transforms wood pulp or waste materials into textile fibers without harmful chemicals, resulting in minimal CO2 emissions and water usage. The fiber is biodegradable and recyclable, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional synthetic fibers.
Shahriare Mahmood, Spinnova’s Chief Product and Sustainability Officer, expressed excitement about the LOI, highlighting its importance in building the market and industrial adoption of Spinnova fiber. Jari Aittakari, Woodspin’s Sales Director, emphasized that the partnership with Puma showcases the potential of sustainably sourced and renewable raw materials to inspire and empower people to make more sustainable choices.
Howard Williams, Director of Global Innovation Apparel & Accessories at Puma, noted that Spinnova’s innovative fiber technology represents a new gateway into manmade cellulosic fiber production, using water instead of chemicals. This collaboration aligns with Puma’s commitment to sustainability and its Vision 2030.
The LOI is a non-binding agreement for booking volumes of wood-based Spinnova fiber from Woodspin, marking an important step in scaling Spinnova’s technology and promoting sustainable practices in the fashion industry. The collaboration is expected to inspire other brands to adopt similar sustainable solutions and contribute to a more environmentally friendly fashion sector.
