Public Eye Releases Report with 33 Targets to Reform Global Fashion by 2030

Public Eye has unveiled a comprehensive report, One-Earth Fashion [1], outlining 33 measurable targets aimed at reforming the global fashion system by 2030. The report identifies 12 key areas for transformation, including overproduction, greenhouse gas emissions, waste, and workers’ rights.

The report sets ambitious goals, such as reducing the use of virgin materials by 40%, halving non-recovered clothing waste, ensuring living wages across global supply chains, and cutting greenhouse gas emissions by at least 60% compared to 2019 levels. These targets are designed to address the fashion industry’s significant environmental and social impact, which has long been criticized for its resource-intensive practices and exploitation of cheap labor.

Public Eye’s report emphasizes the need for a radical overhaul of the fashion system. It advocates for less resource and energy use, slower production and consumption, and fairer distribution of economic value. The report calls for a transition to a new operating system for fashion that respects planetary boundaries and promotes a just and sustainable future.

The report also highlights the importance of meaningful and measurable transformation targets to guide the industry towards a more sustainable and equitable model. It aims to advance the international debate on socio-ecological transformation and a just transition in the fashion system by proposing concrete targets for change and paradigm shifts.

Public Eye’s report is a call to action for social activists, campaigners, discerning consumers, policymakers, etc. to contribute to the transformation of the fashion industry. The report provides concrete ideas for effective regulation and the first steps that companies can take to achieve these targets, such as:

  1. Halving Non-Recovered Clothing Waste: Establishing robust textile recycling programs and encouraging brands to participate in take-back schemes, where consumers can return old clothes for recycling.
  2. Enhanced Supply Chain Transparency: Utilizing blockchain technology to track the entire lifecycle of products, ensuring transparency and accountability in sourcing and manufacturing practices.
  3. Reduction of Virgin Material Use: Implementing circular design principles to reduce the reliance on virgin materials by incorporating recycled fibers and promoting the use of biodegradable and renewable materials.
