Primark has extended its Textile Takeback Scheme to Portugal, making it easier for customers to recycle clothing and textiles. This initiative aligns with the brand’s sustainability goals, encouraging customers to donate items like used clothing, bedsheets, and towels for recycling or reuse.
The scheme is now available in Primark’s Portuguese stores after achieving success in the UK, Ireland, Austria, Germany, and the Netherlands. Customers can drop off apparel, shoes, accessories, and home textiles—regardless of brand or condition—into designated collection boxes. Recycling partner Yellow Octopus oversees sorting the items to determine if they can be reused or recycled.
Proceeds from the programme are donated to UNICEF, Primark’s global charity partner. UNICEF supports underprivileged children with emergency aid, healthcare, education, clean water, and sanitation. This expansion is part of Primarak’s commitment to fostering a sustainable and circular business model.
“We are thrilled to expand our Textile Takeback program into Portugal, making it simpler for our customers to donate their gently used clothing and textiles,” said Lynne Walker, Director of Primark Cares. “Giving more clothing a second chance at life is the goal of our Textile Takeback program’s expansion to our 11 locations around Portugal.”
Primark announced plans to invest over $41.91 million in Portugal earlier this year. The investment includes expanding the popular Colombo store in Lisbon and opening four new stores. Once completed, Primark’s presence in Portugal will grow to 14 locations, increasing retail space by over 30% and creating more than 500 new jobs.
