Plug Power announced on May 20, 2026 that the 30 MW Barrow Green Hydrogen project in Cumbria, UK, has reached final investment decision, with Plug supplying GenEco PEM electrolysers.
The plant will supply roughly 100 GWh/year of green hydrogen to Kimberly-Clark’s Andrex and Kleenex factory in Barrow-in-Furness. The project is delivered by GHECO, a joint venture of Schroders Greencoat and Carlton Power, and is backed by the UK Hydrogen Allocation Round 1 (HAR1) with 15 years of revenue subsidy. Securing Energy for Europe (SEFE) will supply renewable power under a long-term PPA.
Why it matters for Green Renewable Energy: Barrow is only the second HAR1 project to reach FID, providing a critical real-world test of the UK’s green hydrogen business model and contracts-for-difference framework.
