Oryx inaugurates stainless steel recycling facility in Malaysia

The Netherlands-based Oryx Stainless Group, a supplier of recycled stainless steel raw materials, recently inaugurated its new facility in Johor, southern Malaysia. The company stated that this plant will enhance the global circular economy for stainless steel.

“The site reinforces the region’s position as a strategic hub for sustainable industrial growth,” states Oryx.

The company reported that approximately 200 guests attended the opening event, including Johor state officials and national government representatives, as well as delegates from the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA).

“Oryx Stainless Group’s new Johor facility demonstrates how international expertise can transform our manufacturing landscape,” remarked Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid, CEO of MIDA, at the ceremony.

“As a respected name in stainless steel recycling, Oryx Stainless strengthens both Johor’s industrial capabilities and Malaysia’s position in the global circular economy,” said Majid.

“MIDA actively supports investments that combine innovation with measurable environmental impact, particularly those creating high-skill employment opportunities for Malaysians,” he added.

Tobias Kämmer, CEO of Oryx Stainless Holding, commented that, “Malaysia is key to our strategy of bringing high-quality, low carbon footprint stainless steel raw materials closer to the production centers of Asia. Our investment in Johor is not only a business decision, it is a commitment to long-term collaboration, green growth, and shared prosperity. We are proud to contribute to Malaysia’s vision of becoming a global leader in sustainable industrial transformation.”

Oryx emphasizes that the new facility is launching at a pivotal moment for Malaysia’s sustainability objectives. The plant will contribute to the country’s goal of reducing carbon intensity per GDP by 45% by 2030 and aid in attracting $70 billion in green investments. They stated that recycling one metric ton of material can save up to 8.5 metric tons of CO2, meaning the plant could reduce emissions by nearly 1 million metric tons annually.

“New stainless steel—with no loss in quality—can be produced from up to 90 percent of the materials processed on this site,” says Michael Pawlowski, co-founder and supervisory board chair of the of Oryx Stainless Group. “The prerequisite is ‘smart recycling,’ as Oryx Stainless has practiced it since 1990.”

Oryx states itself as an expert in crafting customized blends of recycled materials, supplying melt shops with the precise inputs needed to produce around 150 varieties of stainless steels and specialty alloys.

The Johor workforce is almost entirely made up of local communities, according to Oryx, stating that their payroll there is set to double by the middle of next year.

“Partnerships with Malaysian universities create pathways for engineering students into the growing green technology sector,” adds the company.

Oryx states that the Johor facility will initially process 150,000 metric tons of stainless steel per year during its first operational phase.
