Pact signed to Drive Energy Efficiency in Oman’s Industrial Hubs
Today, the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (OPAZ) signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) with OQ Alternative Energy (OQAE) to launch an Energy Excellence Programme, as part of their efforts to reduce carbon emissions in economic zones, free zones, and industrial cities. The agreement also supports the national strategy for reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Additionally, it seeks to explore collaboration opportunities in developing energy efficiency initiatives and obtaining relevant certifications.
The Memorandum of Cooperation was signed on behalf of OPAZ by Eng. Ahmed Hassan Al Dheeb, Deputy Chairman of OPAZ, and on behalf of OQAE by Najla Al Jamali, CEO of OQAE, says reports.
Under the agreement, the two parties will collaborate on energy efficiency assessments and decarbonisation strategies for OPAZ’s assets. They may also pursue performance-based energy improvement projects if mutually agreed. Additionally, OQAE will assist OPAZ in securing ISO 50001 certification and provide strategic consultancy to develop a comprehensive energy roadmap.
Eng. Mazin Mansour Al Balushi, Head of the Technical Studies Section at OPAZ, stated that the Authority understands the great importance of environmental preservation and carbon emission reduction across the zones under its supervision. The implementation of the Energy Excellence Programme aligns directly with these goals.
He stated that the MoC signing aligns with the Authority’s pursuit of Oman Vision 2040’s environmental goals. He added that the Authority has actively secured partnerships in green energy and low-carbon industries, including green hydrogen, ammonia, and steel, reinforcing its role in driving sustainable development in line with national targets. The Energy Excellence Programme will contribute to improving energy usage in the various zones and ensure a positive impact on enhancing innovation and human capital development in the areas under the Authority’s supervision.
