Oman is gearing up to harness its renewable energy potential to power its Artificial Intelligence (AI) initiatives [1], according to the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology. Eng. Said bin Hamoud al Maawali, the Minister, emphasized the importance of preparing for the expected surge in electricity demand driven by AI, which is projected to account for 30% of global electricity usage by 2050.
The Sultanate is exploring various clean energy solutions, including solar and wind power, to meet this new demand. Al Maawali highlighted that technology giants like Google and Microsoft are turning to nuclear energy to power their AI data centers due to the immense electricity requirements. Oman aims to leverage its abundant renewable resources, particularly in regions like Al Wusta, to develop local AI energy solutions.
The initiative is part of Oman’s broader strategy to use AI for national development and prosperity while ensuring sustainable energy practices. The country is also working on other renewable energy projects, such as a 100 MW wind farm in Duqm and a 500 MW solar power plant in Manah.
