Oman Embarks on Ambitious Renewable Energy Expansion

Oman is making significant strides in its renewable energy sector, with plans to launch ten new projects between 2027 and 2029 [1], targeting a combined capacity of around 2,300MW. This ambitious move is part of the sultanate’s broader efforts to diversify its energy mix and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, aligning with Oman Vision 2040, which prioritizes clean energy and environmental sustainability.

During a recent media briefing organized by the Authority for Public Services Regulation (APSR), H.E. Salim bin Nasser al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, announced the new projects. These include two additional projects with a total capacity of 1,220MW planned by 2029. Oman currently operates the Dhofar 1 Wind Energy Project with a capacity of 50MW and the Ibri 2 Solar Project generating 500MW.

The new projects will significantly boost Oman’s renewable energy capacity. By 2027, the country plans to implement wind and solar energy projects with a combined capacity of 1,400MW to 1,450MW. This capacity will expand by 850MW by 2028 and further increase by 1,200MW by 2029. The strategy will culminate in 2030 with a solar energy project capable of generating 3,000MW.

Dr. Mansoor Talib al Hinai, Chairman of APSR, outlined several initiatives to promote sustainability and energy efficiency. Among these is the Wadi Dayqah Dam optimization project, which will focus on water purification and energy storage. Additionally, a geothermal energy feasibility study is underway, along with a waste-to-biofuel conversion initiative to supply biofuel for cement production.

Community solar stations are also being developed, utilizing health and educational facilities for solar energy generation. A regulatory framework is being drafted to guide energy transmission and foster competition in the electricity market.

The renewable energy sector’s contribution to Oman’s economy is notable, with its share of GDP rising from 2.2% in 2020 to 2.5% in 2024. Investments in regulated sectors have reached approximately RO2.837 billion, with significant allocations for electricity distribution, transmission, and generation.

Its comprehensive strategy and ambitious projects show Oman’s commitment to renewable energy. As the country continues to invest in clean energy, it is poised to become a regional leader in sustainability and environmental stewardship.
