The Northern India Textile Research Association (NITRA) and the CSIR–National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI) in Lucknow have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to boost sustainable innovation in India’s textile sector.
The collaboration will focus on a detailed genomic analysis of Asclepias, or milkweed, a native plant with significant potential as a source of eco-friendly fibre. The initiative has received the support of the Union Minister of Textiles, Giriraj Singh.
The study aims to maximize the use of milkweed as a sustainable raw material, offering an alternative natural fibre solution for the industry. Milkweed fibres are lightweight, insulating, and biodegradable, making them a promising substitute for synthetic fibres in various applications, including home furnishings, technical textiles, and clothing insulation.
Through this partnership, NITRA and NBRI seek to increase fibre yield, establish sustainable sourcing frameworks, and explore profitable uses for milkweed fibre. This initiative also supports the Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) goal by promoting domestic, sustainable fibre alternatives.
