Nippon Steel has reaffirmed its position [1] on the planned acquisition of US Steel, stating that its intention to take full ownership remains the foundation of ongoing negotiations with the U.S. government.
The Japanese steel giant emphasized that it continues to present a variety of proposals in discussions with U.S. authorities, as the review process moves forward. A recommendation from the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) regarding the deal is expected to be presented to former President Donald Trump by May 21. Trump is then anticipated to make a final decision on the matter by June 5.
These upcoming dates provide a clearer timeline for how the situation is unfolding. As a reminder, Biden formally blocked the acquisition before leaving office, making it one of his last major actions as president. Meanwhile, Trump, in his most recent remarks last month, stated, “We don’t want to see it go to Japan,” signaling continued scrutiny over foreign ownership of US Steel.
