Newcleo and Danieli for nuclear-powered green steel production

Danieli signs a Memorandum of understanding defined to explore integration of Newcleo LFR technology with Green Steel technology and plants.

The collaboration is set to explore the integration of newcleo’s Lead-cooled Fast Reactors (LFR) with Danieli’s steelmaking technology intended to combine the production of green steel with nuclear energy production.

The companies will focus on developing integrated solutions by utilizing the unique capability of LFRs to supply both electricity and high-temperature heat. The innovative LFRs will provide the necessary electricity and heat to power certain Danieli Technologies processes for green steel production.

Alessandro Brussi, Chairman of the Board of Danieli, said, “newcleo is an innovative player in the nuclear energy industry, looking to manufacture Advanced Modular Reactors and closing the fuel cycle like Danieli is doing in the iron and steel to have plant and process with zero impact.”

Danieli says that the initiative aligns with their vision of providing high-quality green steel, expecting to contribute to steelmaking in Europe and other countries, providing them with affordable, abundant, and carbon-free electricity and high-temperature heat using newcleo’s nuclear energy solutions.

The agreement may result in energy supply solutions throughout the iron and steel value chain, including applications related to the Danieli Digital Melter and, potentially, the production of green hydrogen to fuel Danieli’s Energiron Direct Reduction Technology for metallic iron production.

In February, the EU Commission adopted the Strategic Dialogue on the Future of the Steel Sector and the Clean Industrial Deal, taking bold steps to assist energy-intensive industries in reducing their energy costs. The initiative also aims to create markets for low-carbon products and has pledged over €100 billion in support of clean manufacturing within the EU.

“By combining our technologies, we will look to open up great opportunities for the global steel industry, not only by addressing the direct needs of steel makers, but also by propelling global supply chains towards a new era of competitiveness and sustainability,” Stefano Buono, founder and CEO of newcleo, said.

Together, the two companies aim to reach significant milestones in the steel industry’s journey toward decarbonisation and reducing energy costs, benefiting the manufacturers and the clients they serve.
