New York Allocates Millions in Hydropower to Fuel Economic Growth Across the State

New York Governor Kathy Hochul recently announced that the New York Power Authority (NYPA) has approved economic development awards [1]to 20 firms, resulting in over $940 million in capital investments and the creation of 1,774 jobs across the state. The awards include low-cost hydropower allocations under the ReCharge NY program, which will provide nearly 7.2 megawatts (MW) of power to companies in regions such as the Finger Lakes, Central New York, Mohawk Valley, Hudson Valley, Southern Tier, New York City, and Long Island.

Among the recipients are BLI International on Long Island, IBM in the Hudson Valley, and Currier Plastics in Central New York. The ReCharge NY program offers power contracts with terms of up to seven years, with half of the power coming from NYPA’s Niagara and St. Lawrence-Franklin D. Roosevelt hydroelectric power plants.

Additionally, the NYPA Board of Trustees approved a low-cost hydropower allocation to Wells Enterprises’ Dunkirk facility in Chautauqua County, supporting the construction of a new 350,000-square-foot facility to expand its ice cream and frozen dessert manufacturing capabilities. This expansion is expected to create 270 jobs and involve an investment of $425 million.

Governor Hochul emphasized that these awards will strengthen New York’s clean energy economy and attract businesses to the state, promoting job growth and economic development.
