Nackiye: Bringing Turkish Fashion to the Global Stage with Style and Heritage

In a world where fashion often expresses cultural identity, Turkish design is slowly but surely making its mark on the international stage, thanks to the innovative sister duo Basak and Defne Kocabiyikoglu, founders of the emerging brand Nackiye. Rooted deeply in the vibrant city of Istanbul, Nackiye stands out with creations embody the richness of Turkish heritage while appealing to a global audience.

With a collection that features whimsical cashmere cardigans adorned with large buttons, elegant silk kaftans with bows, and billowy-sleeved blouses, Nackiye’s designs pay tribute to the strength and spirit of Turkish culture. The sisters have intricately woven their personal stories and Istanbul’s diverse landscapes into each piece, creating garments that resonate with both nostalgia and modernity.

“We’re inspired by the sensations of Istanbul—its unique smells, sounds, and chaotic charm,” Basak explained during a recent showcase in Hong Kong, where Nackiye’s Mediterranean-inspired styles are being featured at Lane Crawford. “Our clothes reflect a juxtaposition of old and new, chaos and beauty, which is very much like Istanbul itself.”

The brand’s unique aesthetic has caught the attention of high-fashion retailers, including Goop and Bergdorf Goodman—an impressive feat for the relatively new label. Nackiye’s rise is a testament not only to the creative talent emerging from Istanbul but also to the power of heritage and personal inspiration.

Nackiye, named after the sisters’ great-grandmother, encapsulates a narrative that ties them back to their roots. The influences of their Ottoman ancestors, known for their rich cultural practices including the whirling dervishes, can be seen in the flowing silhouettes and playful designs of their collection. Each garment represents a purposeful connection to their daily lives, ensuring versatility for any occasion.

“We design for ourselves and every piece has to serve a purpose, whether it’s a casual school run or a sophisticated work event,” said Defne, highlighting their focus on practicality combined with style.

Despite facing challenges common to many brands originating outside the traditional fashion capitals, Basak and Defne have built Nackiye from the ground up with determination and resourcefulness. Both sisters have an academic background—Basak holds a PhD in political science, while Defne studied at Goldsmiths in London—yet it was their passion for fashion and a perceived need for representation that led them to create their line.

Nackiye’s journey began in 2019, funded solely by their own earnings and collaborations. “Everything was totally self-made. We had to fund everything ourselves,” Basak reflected. Their unique approach and distinctive designs quickly garnered interest from major retailers, showcasing an unexpected appetite for authentic Turkish fashion.

“We stand out with our proportions and bohemian elements, which align well with the current trends in the global market,” Basak noted, expressing surprise at the positive reception.

The sisters embrace the challenges of running a fashion brand without the major institutional support that many American and British designers enjoy. “We may not have the backing of industry organizations like CFDA or the British Fashion Council, but all our difficulties inform who we are as a brand,” Defne stated, emphasizing their commitment to fulfilling their vision regardless of obstacles.

Nackiye is not just a fashion label—it’s a celebration of the power of womanhood and the importance of female narratives in today’s society. Drawing on childhood memories and the Mediterranean lifestyle they cherish, the sisters have created a collection that radiates warmth and nostalgia.

As they continue to expand their influence on the fashion scene, Nackiye is proving that Turkish fashion can earn its rightful place alongside other major design hubs. With every twirl of their elegant skirts and every button on their cardigans, Basak and Defne Kocabiyikoglu are weaving a story of resilience, creativity, and a hopeful future for fashion that embraces cultural diversity.  [1
