Mellowdrama’s “AlterEgo”: Repurposing Waste, Empowering Style

Mellowdrama, a womenswear company, has experimented with innovative ways to repurpose fabric waste for its new ready-to-wear collection ‘AlterEgo’. It is inspired by ideals of uniqueness and self-expression which is intended to promote sustainable production. Designer and entrepreneur, Aaina Mahajan founded Mellowdrama as a ready-to-wear label that emphasizes “bold yet comfortable fashion.”

Sustainability takes center stage, with surplus materials artistically converted into unique goods using patchwork, appliqué, and decorations, reducing fabric waste and promoting conscious crafting. Each garment is embellished with handcrafted embellishments that ensure AlterEgo’s bold, unabashed style.

Their fabrics are sourced from registered mills actively involved in processes that aid water conservation and energy efficiency; and run on carbon-neutral electricity powered by biomass. 99 percent of the water the brand consumes during the creation process is recycled and used again. In addition to that, their inventions use thoughtful pattern-making and design to reduce fabric waste.

Notable looks from the collection include metallic trench coats, black sets with ruffles adorned with zippers, and fringe made from distressed denim. Most of their products are made using Tencel, a pure and eco friendly fabric made from sustainably sourced wood pulp.

Mellowdrama supported sustainability stating “We understand that as creators, we have a responsibility to be conscious of our impact on the environment and the people involved in our production processes. Our approach to fashion is grounded in a deep respect for the planet and the people who inhabit it. We are constantly exploring new and innovative ways to reduce our environmental footprint, while at the same time creating clothing that is beautiful, comfortable, and sustainable.”
