Masdar, the UAE’s leading clean energy company, is in discussions to expand its portfolio [1] of 24/7 ‘baseload’ green power plants. This move follows the successful launch of the world’s first large-scale project combining solar power and battery storage, capable of delivering uninterrupted renewable energy around the clock.
The groundbreaking project, located in Abu Dhabi, features a 5.2GW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant coupled with a 19 gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery energy storage system (BESS). This innovative setup allows Masdar to provide up to 1 gigawatt (GW) of continuous baseload power every day, addressing the long-standing challenge of renewable energy intermittency.
During the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2025, H.E. Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Masdar, emphasized the significance of this project. He highlighted the UAE’s leadership in renewable energy and the potential for this initiative to set a global benchmark in clean energy innovation.
Masdar’s collaboration with the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has been pivotal in the development of this project. The success of this venture has prompted Masdar to explore additional projects that can replicate this model, ensuring a steady supply of clean energy.
The expansion plans are part of Masdar’s broader strategy to drive sustainability and reduce carbon emissions. Masdar aims to create a reliable and scalable renewable energy infrastructure by integrating advanced battery storage with solar power. This approach not only supports the UAE’s commitment to environmental stewardship but also positions the country as a key player in the global energy transition.
As Masdar continues to innovate and expand its renewable energy projects, the company is set to play a crucial role in shaping the future of clean energy. The ongoing discussions and potential new projects underscore Masdar’s dedication to providing sustainable and reliable energy solutions for the UAE and beyond.
