Masdar and Emsteel extracting iron from iron ore

UAE-based clean energy leader Masdar (Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company) and ADX-listed steel and building materials firm EMSTEEL announced on Monday that they have completed a pilot project showcasing the production of green steel using green hydrogen. The firm is using green hydrogen to extract iron from iron ore as per the official statement.

The renewable hydrogen produced by the project has been certified by Avance Labs, the hydrogen code manager accredited by the International Tracking Standard Foundation, as per the recently released ISO 19870 methodology for hydrogen.

The pilot project supports the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 initiative, highlighting a collaborative approach between clean energy providers and the heavy industry sector to drive the energy transition forward, sources says.

Eng Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi, Group CEO of EMSTEEL, spoke about the importance of this partnership, “Our efforts to date have been fruitful, with our current utilization of clean energy sources rising above 80% in 2023.”

EMSteel has also proven itself by capturing a part of its CO2 emissions, enabling us to operate with 45% less carbon intensity than the global average.

The UAE’s commitment to sustainable building materials is strengthened by the National Green Certificates Program, introduced by the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure in July 2024.

With the global demand for green steel increasing, the UAE is placing itself as a significant player in the industry as a leading producer of low-carbon hydrogen by 2031.
