Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) and Arabian International Company for Steel Structures (AIC Steel) have celebrated a major milestone [1] in their collaboration on the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) Weapon System. The achievement marks the completion of the first locally-produced components for the THAAD launcher, strengthening Saudi Arabia’s defense industrial capabilities.
Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control President Tim Cahill, along with General Authority for Military Industries (GAMI) Assistant Deputy Nawaf Albawardi and AIC Steel President Wasim Attieh, met at AIC’s Jeddah facility to assess progress on the localization efforts. The initiative underscores the importance of domestic manufacturing in Saudi Arabia’s defense sector while contributing to the resilience of the U.S. supply chain.
This advancement highlights AIC’s precision welding expertise and adoption of advanced manufacturing techniques, reinforcing the country’s defense infrastructure. The successful production of THAAD components demonstrates the deepening collaboration between Lockheed Martin and AIC, aimed at enhancing technical capabilities and supporting Saudi Vision 2030.
“This milestone is significant for both Saudi Arabia and the United States as we continue efforts to support the Kingdom’s THAAD procurement,” said Cahill. “Through this program, we’re strengthening regional security and creating high-quality manufacturing jobs in the U.S., reaffirming the value of our partnership with AIC Steel and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”
Wasim Attieh praised Lockheed Martin’s role in providing training and technological support, enabling the localization of a key THAAD component. “This collaboration has allowed us to advance local production capabilities and reinforce security for Saudi Arabia,” he said, adding appreciation for GAMI’s support throughout the project.
