Liverpool Sets Sights on Global Steel Hub Status After Record-Breaking Year

Liverpool is looking to position itself as a major player in the global steel industry following a record-breaking year for imports [1]. The Port of Liverpool, operated by Peel Ports Group, processed an unprecedented 702,000 tonnes of bulk steel in 2024, surpassing its previous record by 50,000 tonnes.

The steel imports, sourced from South Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan, Turkey, and mainland Europe, primarily consisted of steel coil, which accounted for 85% of the total volume. These materials are crucial for sectors such as renewable energy, construction, manufacturing, and agriculture, reinforcing Liverpool’s significance in supplying vital commodities to various industries.

Peel Ports Group has invested £2 million in a new deep-water bulk berth at the Alexandra Complex to support this expansion, enhancing its ability to handle large shipments. Additionally, the company has allocated resources to 200,000 sq ft of additional storage space, further strengthening Liverpool’s capacity for steel coil and precious metals handling.

Phil Hall, Mersey Port Director at Peel Ports Group, emphasized the port’s strategic importance, stating, “The Port of Liverpool is a deep-water gateway to global markets, and we’re thrilled to achieve a record-breaking year for steel imports. The figures speak for themselves, showing the work we’re doing to cement Liverpool as the leading UK hub providing vital commodities to a range of industries”.

Liverpool’s rise as a steel hub comes at a pivotal moment for the UK’s steel industry. The announcement follows British Steel’s recent consideration of closing its two blast furnaces, potentially marking the end of pure steel production from iron ore in the UK. This shift could significantly affect the country’s supply chain, making Liverpool’s role in steel imports even more critical.
