Lindström Leads Green Shift in China

Lindström Group, a global textile service leader, has announced two partnerships in China to bolster sustainability in its workwear and cleanroom services.
With sustainability becoming a priority in China, businesses align with government policies, such as the nation’s goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. These initiatives reflect growing customer expectations and stricter regulatory demands. Lindström has formalised agreements that underscore its commitment to sustainable and circular practices in this context.
“Lindström has been in the Chinese market since 2006 and is committed to providing sustainable alternatives for workwear and cleanroom textiles. These strategic partnerships highlight Lindström’s dedication to circularity and sustainability,” explained Anupam Chakrabarty, Lindström’s Senior Vice President.
Chakrabarty, part of Finnish President Alexander Stubb’s business delegation, signed the agreements at Beijing’s iconic Great Hall of the People.
Globally, over 85% of textile waste ends up in landfills or is incinerated, posing a major environmental challenge. Lindström’s collaboration with Dingyuan Textile Technology, a recycling company in Hangzhou, addresses this issue. Initially launched two years ago, the partnership now extends to key regions, including Suzhou, Shanghai, Jiaxing, Wuhan, Chengdu, and Guangzhou.
The next phase involves developing closed-loop systems to transform end-of-life textiles into raw materials for new products. This approach reduces the carbon footprint by using recycled fibres, which require less water and energy than virgin materials. Currently, recycled PET bottles are the primary fibre source, but Lindström is investing in innovations to further reduce dependence on virgin resources.
With energy accounting for over 70% of global greenhouse gas emissions, the shift to renewable sources is essential. Lindström has partnered with Yuan Tong Hui Energy Technology, a Beijing-based renewable energy provider, to advance its sustainability goals.
This partnership supports Lindström’s Science-Based Targets initiative to halve its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. It is projected to cut emissions by approximately 450,000 kg and ensure that half of Lindström’s electricity in China comes from green sources by 2025.
Dennis Chan, Managing Director of Lindström China, highlighted additional measures: “Lindström’s efforts to cut emissions go beyond energy sourcing. The company has already transitioned 10% of its logistics capacity to electric vehicles and will continue to do so in the coming years, reducing both CO2 emissions and operating costs.”
These initiatives demonstrate how collaboration and innovation can drive environmental responsibility in the business sector. Lindström is setting a benchmark for the textile industry, proving that sustainability and profitability can coexist.
“With the invaluable support of our partners, Lindström is demonstrating that sustainable transformation is within reach,” says Chakrabarty. “The goal is to lead by example, showing that environmental responsibility and business success can, and should, go hand in hand.”
