The Real Leather. Stay Different. International Design Award recently concluded in London, celebrating innovative designs and a strong commitment to sustainable fashion. The event attracted designers from around the world, showcasing leather as a durable, eco-friendly material that combines creativity with environmental responsibility.
A highlight of the evening was Ruth Girmay’s recognition as Africa’s Most Commendable Designer for her “Overfishing Bag,” a leather creation addressing marine sustainability. Her design captivated the audience with its artistic excellence and environmental consciousness.
Looking ahead, the Real Leather. Stay Different. Africa Talent Leather Design Showcase 2024 will be held in November in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The event will feature the top 15 finalists from across Africa in various categories, including the popular People’s Award, determined by public vote. Girmay, fast-tracked for the UK award, is already set to compete.
US Ambassador to the UK, Jane Dorothy Hartley, opened the event, emphasising the importance of sustainability in fashion. She praised the designers for reducing waste and promoting ethical practices, highlighting leather’s role as a recyclable and durable alternative to synthetic fabrics contributing to environmental harm. “This event merges two key industries—fashion and sustainability—showing how both can create beautiful, durable products that benefit the planet,” Hartley remarked.
Kerry Brozyna, President of the Leather and Hide Council of America, echoed this sentiment, underscoring leather’s long-lasting nature and its role in reducing reliance on synthetic materials like plastic. He advocated for a move away from synthetics, pointing out that leather is a by-product of the dairy and meat industries and offers a sustainable alternative. Brozyna also stressed the importance of the Real Leather. Stay Different. platform in educating young designers about leather, encouraging innovation for a more sustainable future. (1)
