Japan Steel Works to Begin Local Production of Patria AMV in September

Japan Steel Works (JSW) is set to commence local production [1] of the Patria AMV 8×8 wheeled armored vehicle in September, marking a significant milestone in Japan’s defense manufacturing capabilities. The initiative follows a technology transfer agreement with Finnish defense firm Patria, which selected JSW as its licensed production partner.

The Patria AMV was chosen in 2022 to replace the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force’s (JGSDF) aging Type 96 wheeled armored personnel carriers. Initially, JSW will assemble the vehicles using imported parts and subassemblies from Finland, before transitioning to a network of local subcontractors for domestically sourced components.

A core team from JSW recently completed a five-month training program in Finland, where they worked alongside Patria’s experts to assemble the first Japanese AMV. Patria’s staff will continue to provide technical support during the production ramp-up at JSW’s Hiroshima facilities.

Patria’s Key Customer Director Markus Louhivuori revealed that discussions are underway to expand collaboration beyond the AMV, potentially including Patria NEMO mortar systems and specialized vehicle variants. Japan has already allocated funding for 82 AMVs across its defense budgets for fiscal years 2023, 2024, and 2025, totaling ¥56.1 billion ($389.9 million).

The move aligns with Japan’s broader efforts to modernize its defense capabilities and strengthen domestic production of military assets. The JGSDF is also introducing the Type 24 8×8 wheeled armored vehicle under the Common Tactical Wheeled Vehicle program, further reinforcing its commitment to advanced ground mobility solutions.
