Iraq’s Minister of Industry and Minerals, Khalid Battal Al-Najm, inaugurated the launch of two major industrial projects in Basra on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, marking a key step in bolstering industrial growth in the country’s economic capital. The move focuses on the government’s commitment to expanding Iraq’s industrial base and driving economic development in the strategic southern region.
Established at the General Company for Petrochemical Industries complex, the first project is Iraq’s largest chlorine and caustic soda production facility. Using advanced, environmentally friendly technology, the plant will have a daily output of 120 tons of caustic soda, 106 tons of liquid chlorine, 185 tons of hydrochloric acid, and 150 tons of sodium hypochlorite. These products are considered essential for the oil, industrial, and water treatment sectors, while also generating employment opportunities for the local workforce.
At the same time, Minister Al-Najm inaugurated Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar (Green Mountain) Industrial City, a pioneering 2,000-dunam complex. This landmark project, developed in collaboration with China’s Tsingshan Industrial, will specialize in iron, steel, and construction materials, supported by modern integrated infrastructure.
Al-Najm emphasised that these projects reflect the ministry’s strategy of developing integrated industrial cities, designed to diversify Iraq’s economy, boost domestic manufacturing, and generate high-value jobs. He also highlighted their potential to attract additional private and foreign investment.
