Iran’s steel industry has reached a significant milestone [1], producing 30 million tons of crude steel in the past year. The Iranian Steel Producers Association (ISPA) reported that the annual output fell by 7 percent compared to the previous year, when production reached 32 million tons. The decline was primarily attributed to insufficient energy supply for production units, particularly gas and electricity shortages during peak demand periods.
Nevertheless, according to the World Steel Association, Iran retained its position as the world’s tenth-largest crude steel producer. The country’s steel industry has demonstrated steady growth over the years, overcoming obstacles such as international sanctions and the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Iran’s Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) noted modest growth in steel production during 2024, with the total output reaching 31 million tons. However, the energy shortages in December led to an 8.2 percent decline in monthly production, reducing output to 2.6 million tons.
The steel sector remains a vital contributor to Iran’s economy, supporting infrastructure projects and exports. Industry experts emphasize the need for strategic investments in energy efficiency and sustainable production methods to ensure continued growth and competitiveness.
