Templa, a luxury outerwear specialist, is set to revolutionise the high-fashion market by introducing the first biodegradable down jacket, created in collaboration with Allied Feather & Down and Active Apparel Group.
The Hyperion jacket, which won an ISPO Award last November as a prototype, is now ready for commercial production and will debut as part of Templa’s autumn 2025 collection. While sustainable innovations in outerwear have advanced, this marks the first instance of a high-fashion brand committing so fully to circularity, according to the collaborators.
“This collaboration is really putting three pillar players together in a perfect triangle of challenging, investigating, pioneering, and exploring this space of trying to be true, honest, authentic, and real in pushing borders without compromising the design and the silhouette,” said Anati Rakocz, Templa’s Commercial Director. “You don’t need to sacrifice silhouette, attitude, and aesthetic for the values you stand for.”
“You have brands that do amazing things in terms of style, but in terms of performance, it’s not quite there, and then you have very technical brands that are a bit shy on design,” commented Matthew Betcher, Creative Director of Allied Feather & Down. “This product is extremely important. This is really the first time I’ve seen a fashion brand working with ingredient brands in the open as a partnership.”
“It can set the standard for the industry,” stated Lori Oscher, Active Apparel Group’s Chief Design Officer. “This is just the beginning. Templa is raising the bar and pioneering the way.”
Although feather down is inherently biodegradable and recyclable, other components of traditional down jackets, often crafted from performance materials, are not. To address this, the partners developed and sourced biodegradable materials and trims, enabling the jacket to decompose at the end of its lifecycle.
The Templa jacket features 800-fill power down insulation paired with biodegradable synthetic fabrics and trims, designed to break down in an anaerobic environment within approximately five years. The only exception is a minor part of the zipper, which remains non-degradable.
Available in stone, blush, and black for autumn 2025, the Hyperion jacket will retail at a wholesale price of $660.
The Templa, Active Apparel Group, and Allied Feather & Down Biodegradable Project marks a groundbreaking collaboration between raw material suppliers, manufacturers, and designers to create a fully biodegradable outerwear piece. The resulting jacket demonstrates that fashion can achieve sustainability without compromise, proving its potential to minimise environmental impact.
