Hydnum Steel and Knauf Interfer Forge Partnership to Advance Green Steel Solutions in Europe

With the increasing demand for sustainable industrial solutions and a minimal environmental impact, Hydnum Steel, the inaugural green steel plant on the Iberian Peninsula, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Knauf Interfer, a leading European steel processing and distribution firm. This collaboration aims to enhance the availability of emission-free green steel throughout Europe and strengthen the commitment to sustainability in the steel sector.

Under this partnership, Hydnum Steel will provide Knauf Interfer with green steel valued at approximately €80 million annually. The two organizations will collaborate to establish a more efficient and eco-friendly value chain. A central aspect of the agreement includes the creation of a green steel supply network, utilizing Knauf Interfer’s advanced production and supply chain management system. This network will be centered around a trimodal hub in Duisburg, Germany, a strategic inner port location, that will facilitate optimized logistics for sustainable deliveries to customers in Central Europe.

Additionally, the partnership plans to extend into steel product processing, with Knauf Interfer offering services such as cutting, segmentation, and re-coiling, tailored to meet the specific requirements of Hydnum Steel’s clientele. A significant feature of this collaboration is the transparent communication of the CO2 footprint of steel, using Knauf Interfer’s straightforward Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)-based methodology.

Aligned with their mutual dedication to sustainability, Hydnum Steel and Knauf Interfer also intend to create a circular economy framework for recycling ferrous scrap. This innovative effort will enable the recycling of scrap metal generated within Knauf Interfer’s network at Hydnum Steel’s Puertollano plant, effectively closing the production loop and promoting a comprehensive circular economy, further improving the sustainability of their operations.

By joining forces, Hydnum Steel and Knauf Interfer aspire to make significant reductions in carbon emissions within the steel industry, steering the sector toward a more sustainable future. Their partnership marks a significant advancement in green steel distribution and the adoption of environmentally responsible industrial practices across Europe. (1)
