Hydefy: Fashion’s Fungi Future

Hydefy is revolutionising material design with its fungi-based solutions, now offering a groundbreaking option for the fashion, automotive, and interior design industries.

Developed with performance and innovation at its core, Hydefy’s premium material presents a durable, sleek alternative to traditional animal- and plastic-derived leather. Crafted to withstand daily use yet refined for a luxurious finish, Hydefy is available in a wide range of textures, colours, and finishes, all while championing environmental responsibility. Its versatility makes it ideal for custom applications, with the option for rapid prototyping of bespoke patterns.

Hydefy’s debut, in collaboration with Stella McCartney—a leader in sustainable fashion—has garnered significant attention. Unveiled at the Spring/Summer 2025 runway show, the Stella Ryder is the first fungi-based luxury handbag of its kind. With its sculpted, horse-inspired silhouette and striking silver metallic finish, this bag exemplifies how cutting-edge materials and high fashion can seamlessly merge. It is available for pre-order on Stella McCartney’s website.

“I am constantly exploring plant and fungi-based, regenerative alternatives that do not harm animals and heal Mother Earth,” said Stella McCartney. “Harmonious to this philosophy, the innovators behind Hydefy are developing materials with fresh thinking and a focus on sustainability.”

Hydefy’s materials are made using Fy™, a bio-material derived from fungi discovered in NASA-backed research in Yellowstone National Park. This proprietary fermentation process blends Fy with sugarcane waste-derived inputs, creating a vegan, cruelty-free material designed to reduce reliance on finite resources.

“Hydefy isn’t just another alternative—it’s the future of high-performance textiles,” said Thomas Jonas, co-founder and CEO of The Fynder Group, the company behind Hydefy. “We’re proving that innovative materials can meet the highest standards of durability, quality, and aesthetics—offering designers new creative possibilities with a lower impact. This is a game-changer for industries that have long relied on resource-intensive, outdated materials.”

Hydefy is redefining material design and setting a new benchmark for sustainability in the fashion and design sectors. Its innovative fungi-based alternatives demonstrate that cutting-edge solutions can align with environmental responsibility, delivering luxurious, high-performance materials without compromising quality or ethics. With collaborations like the Stella McCartney partnership, Hydefy is clearly leading the way towards a more sustainable, creative, and conscientious future in design.
