Danieli, a global steelmaking technology leader, has partnered with Greensteel Australia to launch the world’s first 100% hydrogen-powered rolling mill.
Australia– The green steel facility to be built in New South Wales, Australia, will establish a global standard for zero-emissions steel production. This decision is considered to be a major player in sustainable steel production.
Danieli awarded Greensteel Australia a contract to build a 600,000-tonne-per-year rolling mill powered entirely by green hydrogen. It is expected to create a global benchmark of zero-emission steel production. The plant is expected to commence its operations by 2026.
Danieli Group’s CEO, Mr Giacomo Mareschi, commented, “It’s inspiring to partner with Greensteel Australia on this world-first hydrogen-powered rolling mill. Greensteel Australia’s commitment to clean, sustainable steelmaking is leading the industry toward a greener future. We’re thrilled to support their vision with our technology and work together to set a new standard in zero-emission steel production”.
The statement by the company expressed its concerns about reducing carbon emissions for economic prosperity and development. According to the International Energy Agency, emissions from steelmaking must be reduced by 50% by 2050 and then continue to fall if the world is to meet its climate goals. Both Danieli and Greensteel Australia are committed to this global goal.
The mill is to feature a reheating furnace powered by 100% green hydrogen, cutting out Nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions and effectively eliminating reliance on fossil fuel use. It is designed to produce rebar in diameters from 10 to 50 mm and spooled coils from 8 to 32 mm, catering to the Australian construction sector.
“At Greensteel Australia, we’re proud to partner with Danieli on this groundbreaking project. By using 100% green hydrogen, we’re not just building a new rolling mill; we’re setting a new example for clean steel production. This project shows our commitment to making steel in a way that’s better for the environment and for future generations”, said Green Steel Australia’s President, Mr Mena Ibrahim.
Along with the production technology, the mill will feature mechanical and electrical automation, overhead cranes, water treatment systems, compressed air facilities, and a fully equipped rollshop. The integration of automation will help lower overhead costs while enhancing safety and efficiency. This initiative highlights Greensteel Australia and Danieli’s leadership in advancing zero-emission industrial practices worldwide. (1)
