Green Steel vs. Trump Tariffs: Brussels Takes the Spotlight

Global Leaders Debate Trump’s Steel Tariffs and the Future of Supply Chains

As global trade policies and decarbonisation goals collide, the need for innovative solutions in the steel and energy sectors has never been greater. The 2nd World Green Steel, Hydrogen, and Energy Summit to be held in Brussels, Belgium, on 29-30 April 2025 brings together industry leaders, investors, and innovators to chart a sustainable path forward.

Following Trump’s return to the White House, various discussions about his decisions to reshape U.S. trade policy and address imbalances have ignited controversies and concerns. His recent decision to impose 25% tariffs on steel and aluminium sectors has been bringing in many discussions internationally, sparking concerns over the future of globalisation, being a significant debate amongst economists, business leaders, and international allies. Trump’s response to these concerns was that “America needed a fairer market where he could make U.S. goods more attractive”.

The announcements of the new tariffs, as well as his comments on establishing reciprocal tariffs, have sparked a trade war affecting steel manufacturing as well as imports and exports.

In response, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced an identical 25% levy on $107 billion of American goods, along with Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum, announcing plans of retaliation. Reports also shared the dissatisfaction of China with the decisions of the White House, adding remarks that they would file a lawsuit with the World Trade Organization and plan for additional countermeasures.

US policy instability threatens Net Zero targets.

Research now shows that instability in US policies could have major implications for global decarbonisation and Net Zero targets to reduce carbon emissions. Trump’s decision to pull out the U.S. from the Paris Agreement can exacerbate an already precarious situation. Various U.S. financial institutions have retreated from their sustainability commitments, and six of the largest US banks have withdrawn from the Net-Zero Banking Alliance (NZBA).

Role of Green Steel

Green steel is the latest approach in the steel industry that aims to reduce carbon emissions and use sustainable practices. It is produced using processes that minimize or eliminate the use of fossil fuels, substantially reducing the carbon emissions that are generated during steel manufacturing. This is achieved by using renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and hydroelectric power and even through the use of alternative fuels such as green hydrogen.

2nd world green steel, hydrogen, and energy summit

The upcoming 2-day conference, World Green Steel, Hydrogen, and Energy Conference in Brussels, aims to address this pressing need by exploring the evolving role of green steel in achieving sustainability objectives. Industry leaders, decision-makers, and stakeholders from the renewable energy and hydrogen sectors will gather to discuss innovations shaping the green steel industry and the energy transition while understanding the recent developments in the global steel markets.

Beyond the technical advancements, the conference will also address the commercial side of green steel production, outlining financing models, investment strategies, and economic incentives that can help companies remain profitable while meeting decarbonisation targets.

Don’t miss this opportunity to be at the forefront of change. Register now for the 2-day conference, 2nd World Green Steel, Hydrogen, and Energy Summit, to be held on 29-30 April 2025 in Brussels, and join the movement shaping a sustainable future.
