A new report by ‘Good On You’ reveals a significant gap between the fashion industry’s actions and its environmental impact. The Fashion Planet Benchmark Report 2025, analyzing data from thousands of brands, found that major fashion brands score an average of just 30% on the ‘planet’ pillar of Good On You’s brand ratings, while small brands perform better at 46%, indicating a widespread failure to address the industry’s environmental consequences.
The report indicates that the fashion industry is not improving its overall environmental performance. The comprehensive examination of over 5,400 large and small businesses reveals gaps in emissions tracking, supply chain transparency, and circular design initiatives.
Despite much discussion about circularity, just 3% of big brands offer rental schemes, and only 13% have resale programs. 88% of brands with emissions targets do not report any progress towards fulfilling them. Furthermore, just 6% of big firms are spending money on research and development for circular technologies.
One of the key findings highlights the lack of comprehensive emissions measurement. The report points out that only a small fraction of brands are diligently tracking and reporting their Scope 3 emissions – those generated throughout their supply chains, from raw material extraction to production. This omission is critical, as Scope 3 emissions typically constitute the vast majority of a fashion brand’s carbon footprint.
“The numbers say it all. Sadly, the industry is far behind where it needs to be to protect the environment and our future,” said Sandra Capponi, co-founder of Good On You “Without stronger action and systemic changes, the industry risks losing the trust of consumers, investors, and regulators — all while undermining the resilience of its own supply chains. Fashion simply can’t continue down this path.”
The report concludes with a strong message that major players in the fashion industry must step up and take meaningful responsibility for their environmental footprint. Without a significant shift towards environmental sustainability, the industry will continue to be a major contributor to the planet’s escalating environmental crisis.
