Hammerwerk Erft G. Diederichs GmbH & Co. KG signed a partnership with Germany’s GMH Gruppe for the use Green Power Premium Steel from Georgsm. arienhütte (GmbH) marking a pivotal role in climate-neutral methods.
Georgsmarienhütte GmbH, a company of the GMH Group has supplied its first shipment of 120 tons of Green Power Premium Steel to a long-established forging company in Bad Münstereifel, signaling the start of a strengthened collaboration between the two firms.
According to reports, the steel is produced entirely from biogenic coal, which is set to reduce carbon emissions by up to 98%, the lowest emission steel currently available in Germany. Georgsmarienhütte GmbH has been leading ahead in the role of sustainable steel production in Germany for over three decades.
The production process utilizes a direct current electric arc furnace, which operates primarily on scrap metal. This method alone reduces CO₂ emissions by approximately 80% compared to conventional blast furnace steelmaking.
However, Georgsmarienhütte GmbH goes beyond traditional, low-emission electric steel production: The steel is smelted using 100 percent renewable electricity and entirely biogenic coal which is a climate-friendly alternative to fossil coal.
Marc Schmitz, Managing Director of Hammerwerk Erft, explained, “With the first ingot melt made of Green Power Premium Steel, we are taking an important step towards climate-friendly production together with Georgsmarienhütte. We are pleased to be embarking on this path with a strong partner at our side.”
The biochar is generated through the pyrolysis carbonization of sustainably sourced wood waste, which helps reduce carbon footprints in steel production with 98% fewer (Scope 1+2) emissions than conventional blast furnace methods.
Frank Agel, Managing Director of Georgsmarienhütte GmbH, adds, “With ‘Green Power Premium,’ we can actively support the decarbonization of our customers’ products. We are pleased to be able to accompany our long-standing business partner Hammerwerk Erft on this journey with the first batch of our high-quality green power premium steel for their application.”
