The Global Fashion Agenda (GFA) has published the third edition of its GFA Monitor Report, just in time for COP29. This annual report offers a comprehensive update on the fashion industry’s sustainability progress. GFA, a non-governmental organization, promotes industry collaboration to drive action and inspire positive change in fashion and sustainability, aiming for a net positive impact.
Produced in collaboration with partners such as the Apparel Impact Institute, Ellen MacArthur Foundation, and Fair Labor Association, among others, the report tracks progress and challenges across five key sustainability priorities – Respectful and Secure Work Environments, Better Wage Systems, Resource Stewardship, Smart Material Choices, and Circular Systems.
GFA CEO Federica Marchionni emphasized the significance of the report, stating, “The GFA Monitor 2024 reinforces COP29’s core themes: enhancing ambition and enabling tangible action. As climate threats, geopolitical challenges, and skepticism towards sustainability intensify, the industry must rethink its strategies to adapt swiftly while nurturing long-term resilience.”
The report highlights significant advancements in areas such as flexible employment and wage transparency, while also noting the need for continued efforts to align industry standards and strengthen buyer-supplier partnerships. Despite some progress, wage gaps persist, particularly in key manufacturing regions where inflation outpaces wage growth.
The GFA Monitor 2024 also stresses the importance of holistic strategies for biodiversity conservation, water stewardship, and pollution control. Marchionni urged industry leaders to utilize the practical steps, tools, programs, and proven best practices outlined in the report to foster a sustainable, equitable, and transparent fashion ecosystem.
