Glencore opens deep-water scrap route from EU to Türkiye

Commodity trader Glencore launched deep-water scrap-metal shipments from the EU to Türkiye in June 2026, partnering with Polish transshipment firm Lebal.

Türkiye is the world’s largest ferrous scrap importer, with annual imports of 18–20 million tonnes feeding its predominantly EAF-based steel sector. The country sources from the US, EU, Baltic states, and UK.

The shipment is being arranged through a Baltic exporter. While this supplier has sent only a small number of deep-water cargoes to Turkiye in recent years, analysts point out that its previous ability to expand volumes was limited due to insufficient financing.

Why it matters for green steel: Cross-border scrap arbitrage between the EU and Türkiye will increasingly be priced for carbon-content advantages as CBAM scope expansion approaches, reshaping global EAF feedstock flows.
