Germany’s Indirect Steel Exports to the US Reach 2.4 Million Tons Amid Tariff Concerns

Germany’s steel industry is facing growing uncertainty as indirect steel exports [1] to the United States reached 2.4 million tons, according to Wirtschaftsvereinigung Stahl (WVStahl), the German Steel Federation. The figure highlights the significant role of steel-intensive products, such as machinery and automotive components, in transatlantic trade.

The announcement comes after concerns over new US tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, which could disrupt Germany’s export-oriented economy. WVStahl has warned that these measures pose a serious risk to the industry, particularly as indirect exports account for a substantial portion of Germany’s steel-related trade with the US.

Kerstin Maria Rippel, Director General of WVStahl, emphasized that the tariffs could have far-reaching consequences, not only for direct steel exports but also for sectors reliant on steel-intensive goods. She urged the European Union and the German government to take decisive action in response to the US trade policies.

The German Steel Federation has called for continued political dialogue with the US while advocating for domestic measures to support the industry. Rippel suggested redirecting resources from Germany’s Special Fund for Infrastructure and Climate Protection to stimulate economic growth and mitigate the impact of trade restrictions.

As Germany navigates the evolving trade landscape, industry leaders remain focused on securing stability for steel producers and exporters. The coming months will be crucial in determining how the country responds to the challenges posed by US tariffs and shifting global trade dynamics.
