A recent report published by the Danish non-profit Global Fashion Agenda (GFA) revealed that economic pressures are hindering the progress of fashion companies’ sustainability initiatives.
The report, which focuses on leading the industry giants towards a sustainable and net-positive fashion sector, urges them to include sustainability in their business plans, combining swift action with long-term resilience.
The GFA Monitor report was created in partnership with organisations such as the Apparel Impact Institute and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, combining expertise and insights from across the industry, and provides a comprehensive, well-rounded view of the challenges and opportunities for sustainability in fashion while stressing the need to integrate environmental and social objectives with business goals.
The report also draws on insights from the Fashion Industry Target Consultation, a collaboration between GFA and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), which gathered feedback from 100 stakeholders across six continents on 27 critical action areas for sustainable fashion.
“The GFA Monitor 2024 reinforces COP29’s core themes: enhancing ambition and enabling tangible action. As climate threats and scepticism towards sustainability intensify, the industry must adapt swiftly while fostering long-term resilience. I urge leaders to use this report’s practical steps and proven best practices to build a sustainable, equitable, and transparent fashion ecosystem,” said Federica Marchionni, CEO of Global Fashion Agenda.
