EMSTEEL to Launch UAE’s Largest Industrial Solar PV Rooftop Project

EMSTEEL Group has announced a partnership with Yellow Door Energy, the company considered to be the largest sustainable energy partner in the Middle East and Africa, for the development of the largest industrial solar PV rooftop project in the UAE. The 31.5 MWp solar project will supply clean energy to EMSTEEL’s operations, providing the Group’s strategy to adopt self-sufficient renewable power solutions and underscoring EMSTEEL’s leadership in advancing sustainable manufacturing practices across the region.

Zawya reported that the initiative can be seen as part of EMSTEEL’s decarbonisation strategy implementation and aligns with the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 commitment. The agreement says that Yellow Door Energy would finance, build, own, operate, and maintain solar panel installations across 40 EMSTEEL roofs in ICAD 1, Abu Dhabi, while compromising rooftop and carport solar installations, including high-efficiency solar panels, with technology used for carports that optimizes clean energy generation.

The project is expected to generate electricity of 50 million kilowatt-hour (kWh) annually, reducing approximately 16,000 metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions from the scope 2 emissions annually over the next 25 years. Alongside, the 100% self-consumed renewable electricity is expected to directly lower energy costs and reduce the carbon footprint, reinforcing EMSTEEL’s commitment to enhancing operational efficiency and advancing decarbonization efforts

Saeed Ghumran Saeed Al Remeithi, Group CEO of EMSTEEL, stated, “Sustainability is at the core of EMSTEEL’s strategy, and advancing our decarbonisation efforts is a key priority as we shape the future of sustainable manufacturing. This partnership with Yellow Door Energy marks an important step in implementing our recently published decarbonisation strategy by expanding the use of renewable energy across our operations.”

Jeremy Crane, Group CEO of Yellow Door Energy, also added, “With a total capacity of 31.5 MWp, this project demonstrates the potential for solar to power our primary industries in the UAE. As a UAE-founded company, Yellow Door Energy remains committed to helping businesses reduce energy costs and decarbonise their operations.”

Construction is scheduled for 2025, with commissioning targeted for 2026, with Yellow Door Energy overseeing the whole development, ensuring effortless execution while removing the initial investment requirements for EMSTEEL.

As part of the Group’s broader decarbonisation strategy, the company is committed to reducing absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 40% in its Steel Business Unit and 30% in its Cement Business Unit by 2030, using 2019 as the baseline year. The long-term objective is to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

“By integrating on-site solar power, we are reinforcing our leadership in industrial sustainability, contributing to the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 vision, and setting new benchmarks for renewable energy adoption in the UAE’s steel industry.” Saeed said.
