EGPC Chairman Showcases Progress and Vital Role of Renewable Energy Initiatives in Egypt’s Future

Salah Abdel Kerim, Chairman of the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC), recently chaired a meeting of the Energy Transition Committee [1] to discuss the progress of the corporation’s renewable energy projects. During the meeting, Abdel Kerim emphasized the strategic necessity of transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources to ensure the sustainability and competitiveness of the petroleum sector.

Abdel Kerim stressed the importance of raising awareness about renewable energy projects and their economic benefits. He also stressed EGPC’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with partners through flexible incentives to accelerate the recovery of investment costs and overcome any obstacles.

Ahmed Ghassan, CEO Deputy Assistant for Planning and Projects at EGPC and head of the committee, presented a comprehensive report on the progress of several key projects. One notable project is the completion of an electricity generation project using solar cells at Belayim Petroleum Company with a capacity of 8 megawatts and an investment cost of $8.3 million. This project achieves an annual energy saving of 20.4 megawatts and reduces carbon emissions by 4.1 tons equivalent annually.

Another significant project is the completion of the first phase of connecting several wells to a central power generation station in the Menace MU field at Khalda Petroleum Company. The second phase is currently underway, with eight additional wells connected to the network at a total investment cost of $12 million. This project results in an annual saving of 19,000 tons of diesel and reduces carbon emissions by 61,000 tons of CO2 equivalent.

EGPC is also working on establishing a new 13-megawatt power station project in Khalda fields, with similar projects progressing at Petroshahed and Petrofarah companies. Additionally, the first phase of a power station project in the Esh El-Malaha fields with a capacity of 1.4 megawatts out of a total planned capacity of 5 megawatts is expected to be completed during the first half of 2025.

Abdel Kerim also highlighted the implementation of nine flare gas recovery projects aimed at capturing and converting recovered gases into value-added petroleum products or directing them to the national natural gas network. These projects are part of EGPC’s integrated vision to optimize operations, reduce costs, and maximize the use of natural resources in line with global clean energy trends.
