eBay UK has launched a new consignment service for luxury items, offering users an innovative way to sell high-end possessions. Initially focusing on designer handbags, the service connects consumers with expert sellers who manage the entire listing and sales process.
This move into the luxury sector comes as demand for pre-owned luxury goods rises, with savvy shoppers seeking affordability and sustainability. eBay’s partnership with Luxe Collective, a specialist in pre-owned luxury items, aims to capitalise on this trend while addressing common challenges faced by sellers of high-value goods.
“As consumer interest in pre-loved luxury grows, eBay is evolving to provide shoppers with the best service,” said Mari Corella, General Manager of Luxury and Sneakers at eBay. “Our consignment service builds on the success of our Authenticity Guarantee, which vets and verifies luxury goods, enabling customers to buy and sell with confidence.”
The process is designed for simplicity. Sellers complete an intake form and ship their items using a prepaid, insured label provided by eBay. From there, eBay and Luxe Collective handle everything, from photography to pricing and listing. Once sold, proceeds are split, with the original owner receiving a majority percentage based on the final sale price.
Early results from the service’s U.S. launch are promising, with items sold through eBay consignment achieving significantly higher final sale prices compared to traditional listings. For instance, a small quilted Chanel 19 flap bag sold for over 45 per cent more than the average price for similar bags on the platform.
This consignment service is part of eBay’s broader strategy to strengthen its luxury market position, following the expansion of its Authenticity Guarantee to pearl jewellery and the acquisition of Certilogo, an AI-powered authentication provider.
