Canopy Releases 2024 Hot Button Report Tracking MMCF Sustainability Progress

Canopy has released its annual Hot Button Report for 2024 [1], tracking the sustainability progress of man-made cellulosic fiber (MMCF) producers. The report reveals encouraging strides and critical areas for growth in the MMCF sector, with 97.5% of global production now represented.

This year, 71% of rated producers earned green, partial dark green, or dark green shirts, reflecting industry-wide progress. Green shirt production held steady at 53%, but industry consolidation and capacity growth by red shirt producers underscore the need for continued work to eliminate sourcing from Ancient and Endangered Forests and for accelerated adoption of next-generation fibers.

Scores indicate the number of Buttons producers have earned for each step taken toward improved forest sourcing. Green shirt represent the producers is leading and embracing in CanopyStyle commitments. Whereas red shirt represents at high risk of sourcing from Ancient and Endangered Forests/not engaging with Canopy.

The report highlights the leadership of producers such as Aditya Birla, Lenzing, and Tangshan Sanyou, who have all earned the highest number of buttons and dark green shirts. Chinese manufacturers Yibin Grace and Xinxiang Chemical Fiber Co. also achieved high button counts due to their commitment to scaling up Next Generation fiber solutions.

Despite these positive developments, the report emphasizes the need for more collaboration across the global fashion, apparel, and textile ecosystem to embed circularity, ethics, and sustainability into business strategies. The goal is to ensure that growth aligns with the planet’s limits while creating a more equitable future.
