Canadian Steel Industry Faces Layoffs Amid US Tariffs

The imposition of tariffs on steel imports by the United States has led to significant job [1] losses in Canada, with hundreds of workers affected. The steel tariff policy has sent shockwaves through the Canadian manufacturing sector, with economists warning of broader economic repercussions in the coming weeks.

Among the hardest-hit companies is Canada Metal Processing Group, which recently announced a workforce reduction of 140 employees, citing the impact of the tariffs. The layoffs include a mix of permanent and temporary job cuts, work-share adjustments, and retirements. Ontario-based Algoma Steel has also been affected, with 27 employees laid off, and the company warning of further cuts if new Canadian customers cannot be secured.

Marty Warren, National Director of the United Steelworkers union, expressed concern over the growing crisis, predicting that the expiration of a reprieve under the US- Mexico- Canada Agreement on April 2 could lead to tens of thousands more job losses. “With the full-blown tariffs coming in, it could affect 100,000 of our members,” he stated.

In response to the economic strain, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced measures to support affected workers, including earlier access to employment insurance and a multibillion-dollar aid package for businesses. However, advocates argue that more substantial reforms are needed to provide financial security for laid-off workers.
